I think that with the general drift towards urban centres that is still going on world-wide, we are becoming more and more divorced from the idea that we are integral to the natural world. It seems more a case of nature is something you visit, not something you live within. This numbness to natural cycles does nothing for our future awareness of responsibility to the environment.
