Haslemere Peasant Tapestry on the cover of the newly published 2017 Annual Report of the Haslemere Educational Museum.
A blog recording the Peasant Arts movement in Haslemere, Surrey, UK around the early 1900s, and it's founders Joseph King, Maude Egerton King, Godfrey Blount, Ethel Blount and Greville MacDonald. Arts and crafts, religion, literature, architecture, suffragettes, family trees, local locations and strong beliefs, this story has it all. Over a century later, their promotion of the pleasures of homemade craft is still relevant today.

ReplyDeleteThank you for posting this.. and for your page, Kate. I am researching the interesting and ultimately tragic life of my Great Aunt Lucy Snape, whose father was in service to Joseph King. They lived at Birtley cottages and Joseph used his influence to get Lucy a job as Stewardess 2nd class on the Titanic. Her sad story is told here... I would love to work with you on discovering more about her as I am certain she and my great grandmother Bertha Lennard would have been at the spinning and weaving school X

Hi, it is such a sad tale of your Great Aunt Lucy. You're right, they probably were involved in the Wheel and Spindle Club - http://peasant-arts.blogspot.com/2011/03/weaving-and-emancipation-of-princesses.html#comment-form
