The (Illustrated) Song of the Sower by Godfrey Blount

Back in April 2011 I posted The Song of the Sower poem by Godfrey Blount.  It was taken from a large song sheet type format paper, with the Peasant Arts Society noted at the bottom and their Bayswater address, 51 Pembridge Road.

I have since found that The Vineyard April 1914 (p.408) published The Song of the Sower told through some beautiful Godfrey Blount illustrations.

  1. That is beautiful. What a find! Thank you for posting this.

Both the song and the illustrations are resonant of ancient Mother Earth/ Father Sky mythology. I wonder what his sources and inspiration were?

We have "The rapturous inrush of the spring" here! Hoping that all is well with you and that the Blount`s apple tree will soon be in blossom.

  2. Hi, lovely to hear from you.

I love these illustrations. I do not think I've done them justice by trying to include the typed words below. They are quite different from the bulk of Blount's illustrations, but similar to an old Christmas card they have at the Haslemere Educational Museum. I also have another illustrated Blount poem up my sleeve to share.

Spring is looking beautiful here. I will have to post some photographs of the old Bramley tree. We had it cut back quite hard 2 Summers ago and sadly last year it still barely delivered any fruit. However I am (in some way!) hopeful that this Autumn we will once again be knee deep in damaged apples.

  3. Hi Kate, any chance you could scan and email me copies of these Blount illustrations? I would love to put some of them in my farm market. Thanks -- Jim Kinsel, Honey Brook Organic Farm, Chesterfield, NJ USA www.honeybrookorganicfarm.com

    1. Hi Jim, Thanks for your interest. The book I took these from is very fragile and the photos on this page whilst not of perfect quality are the best I could do I'm afraid. Best wishes Kate
